American School in Japan

Ron Dirske, Teacher, Advanced Placement Statistics Teacher, and family

The American School in Japan (ASIJ) is one of the oldest and most respected international institutions in Japan. Founded in 1902 as a small, home-based school, ASIJ has become an institution that is now known worldwide as a pre-eminent, college-preparatory international school. More than 1,300 students representing over 40 nations are enrolled in ASIJ programs. The school is committed to academic excellence and student-centered learning, and offers a unique global perspective in its educational programs.

Ron Dirkse, teacher for the school's Advanced Placement Statistics course, believes that Minitab is a valuable part of the formula for success. Mr. Dirske stated, "Minitab is a tool that students will use in their future education and careers. We have used Minitab in our AP Stats program since 1997. The students realize that the software, although not as handy as a scientific calculator, is much more powerful, and they appreciate that for their class projects. They seem to pick up the main aspects of Minitab quite quickly, which makes it easier for me to focus on teaching statistics."

Student projects include analyzing a first-day survey of the class, analyzing their own surveys, analyzing experiments, and a year-end project of their choosing.
