Bartlett's test (or the F test) versus Levene's test for equal variances - ID 1183

Revised: 7/11/2008

Applies to

  • Minitab 16
  • Minitab 15

Description

When testing equal variances (using Stat > Basic Statistics > 2 Variances or Stat > ANOVA > Test for Equal Variances), should I use Bartlett's test (or the F test) or Levene's test?

Solution

Bartlett's test and the F Test are sensitive to the normality assumption. Levene's test is robust to the normality assumption. So if your data are continuous and normally distributed, use Bartlett's test (or the F-test). If your data are continuous, but not necessarily normally distributed, use Levene's test.

Note: An F test replaces Bartlett's test when there are only two groups.
